Renown Children’s Hospital Announces 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child

Renown Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) are pleased to announce that Shaylie Edwards will be returning as the 2024 Champion Child. In 2019, on Shaylie’s last day of preschool, she and her sister went to the park to play. That playful afternoon changed dramatically when she was struck by a car when she and her father were crossing the street. A gentleman in the park leapt in to assist and checked her pulse. He began chest compressions as her mother rushed to her side and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The first responders arrived quickly and took Shaylie to Renown Children’s Hospital. She was admitted to the Wilbur D. May Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Renown Children’s Hospital and stayed there for two and half months.

Shaylie suffered a broken neck in two places, a broken jaw in two places, a fractured sacrum, a broken femur, and three small brain bleeds. Shaylie’s prognosis was uncertain and due to her brain bleeds, her family had to wait several days to see if the bleeding would subside. Fortunately, she made it through! Despite having remaining complications from her traumatic brain injury, Shaylie was able to go home after all broken bones had healed. Today, Shaylie is eight years old and she continues to make progress through rehabilitation services.
