Costco is Helping Renown Children’s Hospital Change Kids’ Health May 1 – 31

Local children’s hospitals are on the frontlines when protecting the health of future generations. But they can’t do it alone. Each dollar that Costco and its members raise through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals improves kids’ health, allowing them to grow to their full potential.

In May, you can help to change kids’ health for local children’s hospitals through CMN Hospitals during the annual Costco fundraising campaign. Shop online or in-warehouse at Costco, in Reno, Sparks and Carson City and donate to help kids like Shaylie Edwards.   In 2019, on Shaylie’s last day of preschool, she and her sister went to the park to play. That playful afternoon changed dramatically when she was struck by a car when she and her father were crossing the street. A gentleman in the park leapt in to assist and checked her pulse. He began chest compressions as her mother rushed to her side and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The first responders arrived quickly and took Shaylie to Renown Children’s Hospital. She was admitted to the Wilbur D. May Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Renown Children’s Hospital and stayed there for two and half months.

Shaylie suffered a broken neck in two places, a broken jaw in two places, a fractured sacrum, a broken femur, and three small brain bleeds. Shaylie’s prognosis was uncertain and due to her brain bleeds, her family had to wait several days to see if the bleeding would subside. Fortunately, she made it through! Despite having remaining complications from her traumatic brain injury, Shaylie was able to go home after all broken bones had healed. Today, Shaylie is eight years old and she continues to make progress through rehabilitation services.

The Costco fundraising campaign runs through May 31, where funds go to local children’s hospitals through CMN Hospitals to directly help kids like Shaylie to have a life full of wonder and possibility in our community. Since 1991, our local Costco employees and members have donated more than $4.9 million dollars for kids treated at Renown Children’s Hospital.
